Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 1 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)

Who can tell me what very special holiday we celebrate this week? That’s right, Veterans Day. Why do we celebrate Veterans Day? It is a day to honor those men and women who have served in the military.

Men and women in the armed forces must train daily to prepare for future battles. They practice many drills over and over so they will automatically know what to do when that situation arises. They prepare their minds and their bodies to react in the right way to whatever situation is presented upon them.

What are some ways in which they train? (listen to their answers) Yes, those are all great examples. In the military, they practice using their equipment, they exercise to gain strength and endurance and they must learn survival skills.

Like service men and women, we must do some training of our own. It is quite unlike what they do but very important. We must train ourselves daily to become godly. 1 Tim 4:7 says “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.” Each one of us must become a spiritually disciplined person. When you are spiritually disciplined, you will be able do the right thing at the right time with the right spirit. You are training yourself to act and re-act and think in any situation as Jesus would. Training to become godly also helps you grow a closer relationship with God.

What are some ways we can train as a Christian? We must read and study the bible. We must ask God to speak to us as we read and then we must apply God’s word into our daily lives.

Many years ago, the army used the famous slogan “Be all that you can be”. Well let’s “Be all that we can be” for God and train ourselves daily to become more like Christ.

Dear Lord, help us to remember that we need to train each day so we can become more like you. Amen.
