No Ordinary King

Theme

Jesus was no ordinary king.

Object

A Caesar/Greek King Halloween costume from a retail store, (mine is a white sheet with a black sash across the shoulder and a plastic wreath like simulated green garland in the form of a headband), a plastic washbasin as for washing dishes, optional handtowel and an apron. If you have a microphone, you may want to place it in a hands-free holder as you will begin by wearing the Caesar costume and change into the apron as you talk.

Scripture

"But the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Matthew 28:20

Jesus was a king, wasn't he? But He was no ordinary king. He said that His kingdom wasn't here on Earth. No, He said His kingdom was in Heaven, but He came here as a tiny baby to show us the way to love and to live. He chose His followers to carry on His work because He knew that He would die on the cross for us.

(Begin removing the Caesar costume and begin putting on the apron and pick up the basin and towel.)

But Jesus was no ordinary king. He did things that people didn't expect a king to do. He even washed people's feet. That's something kings never did. He may have even used a basin and towel like these. He even died on the cross for his people - something else no other king has ever done. Shall we pray...

Dear Jesus, thank you for being no ordinary king. Thank you for trading your throne for a lowly manger and for living for your people. Thanks you for serving us instead of expecting people to serve you. Amen.
