Sermon Title: "On the Mountain Top with Jesus"

Scripture Reading: Matthew 17:1-9

MOUNTAIN WALKING: If there are hills or chairs or ramps, etc for children to walk up and down on, let children have a "timed event" for walking the "mountains". They'll enjoy seeing what their TIME was for the Mountain obstacles!

MOUNTAIN BALL THROW: Divide the children into two teams and each team can be placed on both sides of the church or another building to try and throw the ball OVER THE MOUNTAIN (roof). Continue throwing back and forth and say OVER THE MOUNTAIN as the team member is throwing the ball! Let all team members take a turn at throwing the ball.

MOUNTAIN BIKING: Divide the children into teams and run a "MOUNTAIN BIKE" relay game. One child will ride "piggy back" on another child's back pretending to be riding a bike to the finish line. Continue until all the children on each team have been BOTH a rider and the "bike".

UPSIDE DOWN HEARTS: Let children cut out various sizes of hearts and glue onto a piece of construction paper UPSIDE DOWN so the top will be the mountain. On the upside down hearts, children can write GOD LOVES US AND RENEWS OUR STRENGTH!

WALKING WITH JESUS: Let the children draw large mountains on a poster (or on a piece of construction paper). Tell children to write in VERY SMALL letters, "Walking with Jesus" up and down the edges of the mountain as many times as they can within three minutes. After the time is up, the children may color the mountains and see how many times they were able to write the words!

MOUNTAIN BUILDING: Give the children wooden blocks or various plastic containers to build the highest mountain they can without the containers or blocks falling. Talk to children about the mountains and valley's of our lives and God renewing our strength.

FRAMING A MOUNTAIN: Provide beautiful pictures of mountains from old calenders and let the children pick out the Mountain picture that they would like to frame. Cut out the pictures and then glue them onto a piece of construction paper of child's choosing. Let children write or decorate the border to say something similar to, "Walking with Jesus on the mountain top."

MOUNTAIN THUMB PRINTS: Have the children draw some mountains on a piece of paper and then use their finger or thumb INK print to represent Elijah and Moses on the mountain. The children could also make thumb print figures for John, Peter and James, as well!

LICORICE MOUNTAINS: Give each child some cherry or black licorice sticks to form mountains (after washing hands, of course). After each child tells something they have learned about our lesson today, they can EAT their mountain shape of licorice! (Provide another snack for the children who don't care for licorice.)
