Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God— this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:2 (NIV -UK)

(Hold up radio) I love listening to the radio, especially when I'm driving around town. I bet you have favorite stations too - maybe ones that play your favorite songs or talk about sports! But sometimes when I'm listening, the signal gets all fuzzy and filled with static, making it impossible to understand what's being said. Let's try this right now. (Turn on radio to clear station) Listen to how clear this station sounds! Now watch what happens when I move the dial just a little. (Create static) Yikes! Which one would you rather listen to and why? The clear...

one helps us actually hear and understand what's being broadcast, right? Our relationship with God works exactly like tuning into a radio station - sometimes we need to adjust our "spiritual antenna" to hear Him more clearly.

Today marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day season that prepares our hearts for Easter. Think of Lent like spiritual training - just like athletes train their bodies for competition, we train our hearts and minds to grow closer to God. During Lent, many Christians choose to give up something they enjoy or a habit that might be getting in the way of their relationship with God. This isn't about punishment - it's about making space in our lives for God to work! What are some things kids your age might consider giving up? Maybe it's too much screen time, complaining, gossiping about friends, or eating junk food that makes you feel sluggish. Some of you might struggle with lying to avoid getting in trouble, or being mean to siblings when you're frustrated. These habits are like static on our spiritual radio - they make it harder to hear God's voice and follow His plan for our lives.

Here's something really important to understand: when we give up a bad habit, we can't just leave an empty space - we need to fill it with something good! Think of it like this: if you stop watching two hours of TV every day, you suddenly have two hours of free time. What will you do with that time? If you don't plan ahead, you might end up replacing TV with endless video games or social media scrolling - trading one distraction for another! A friend of mine decided to stop biting her nails during Lent, which was great. But instead of biting her nails, she started twisting her hair so much that she actually pulled some of it out! She didn't realize she'd simply switched to a different nervous habit. This teaches us that successful change requires intentional planning. If you give up complaining, what could you practice instead? Maybe gratitude or encouraging others. If you give up junk food, what healthy snacks could you enjoy? If you stop arguing with your family, how could you use that energy to build stronger relationships with them?

Let's think deeper about why this matters. When Jesus went into the wilderness for 40 days, He was preparing for His ministry by focusing completely on God and resisting temptation. Lent gives us a chance to follow His example in a smaller way. By choosing to give up something that distracts us from God, we're essentially saying, "God, You are more important to me than this thing I enjoy." It's like tuning out the static so we can hear the clear signal. (Turn radio back to fuzzy station) When our lives are full of distractions, bad habits, or things that pull our attention away from God, it's like trying to listen to this static-filled station. (Tune back to clear station) But when we intentionally remove those distractions and replace them with good habits, our connection with God becomes crystal clear. We can better understand what He wants for our lives, hear His guidance when we face tough decisions, and experience the peace and joy that comes from living according to His design.

Prayer: Dear God, as we begin this season of Lent, help us to honestly examine our lives and identify the things that create "static" in our relationship with You. Give us the wisdom to choose meaningful sacrifices and the strength to replace bad habits with good ones. Help us to use these 40 days to tune our hearts more closely to Yours, so that we can hear Your voice clearly and follow Your path for our lives. Prepare our hearts to celebrate the amazing gift of Jesus' death and resurrection at Easter. Amen.
