Children's Sermon: Jesus Gives Us the Comforter (John 14:15-21)

Set up the fan to move and blow over the children. Hand each of the children a piece of streamer to hold as you talk. Allow them to hold it up into the wind when it comes their way.

Today we're going to explore something invisible yet incredibly powerful - something that changes everything even though we can't see it with our eyes.

Pretend to just begin feeling the wind. Act surprised and unaware of what you're feeling and what the source of the wind is.

Do you feel that? What is it and where...

is it coming from? (Allow kids to answer, but keep asking them to provide facts and proof of this wind they do not see.) How can you be so sure there's wind here when you can't actually see it? What evidence convinces you it's real?

You're absolutely right - we can't see the wind itself, but we see its effects everywhere. Your streamers are dancing, your hair is moving, you feel cooler, and the air pressure has changed. The wind is invisible, but its presence is undeniable because of what it does.

This is exactly like something Jesus promised us in John 14. When Jesus knew He would return to heaven, He didn't want to leave His followers feeling alone or abandoned. So He made an incredible promise: "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth" (John 14:16-17).

That advocate is the Holy Spirit - God's own presence living inside every person who believes in Jesus. Just like this wind, we can't see the Holy Spirit with our physical eyes, but we absolutely know He's real because of what He does in our lives.

Think about it: How do you know when the Holy Spirit is working? (Allow discussion.) The Holy Spirit helps us understand God's Word when we read the Bible. He gives us courage to do the right thing when it's hard. He comforts us when we're sad or scared. He helps us love people who are difficult to love. He gives us wisdom to make good choices and convicts our hearts when we sin so we can ask for forgiveness.

Here's what's amazing - Jesus called the Holy Spirit our "Comforter" and "Helper," but He's also our teacher and guide. When you face a tough decision at school about whether to cheat or tell the truth, that gentle voice inside nudging you toward honesty? That's the Holy Spirit. When you feel compassion for someone who's hurting and want to help them? The Holy Spirit is working through you.

The word Jesus used for the Holy Spirit in the original language was "Parakletos" - it means "one called alongside to help." Imagine having the most wise, loving, powerful friend always right beside you, ready to help in any situation. That's what we have in the Holy Spirit!

But here's an important truth: the Holy Spirit doesn't force us to listen or obey. Just like you can choose to hold your streamer up in the wind or keep it down, we can choose to pay attention to the Holy Spirit's guidance or ignore it. When we listen and follow His leading, our lives become more like Jesus - full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Let me ask you this: What's one area of your life where you need the Holy Spirit's help this week? Maybe it's being patient with a younger sibling, standing up to bullying, or being honest about a mistake you made?

Remember, the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you if you've made Jesus your Lord and Savior. That's not just comforting - that's life-changing power!

Heavenly Father, thank You for not leaving us alone. Thank You for giving us Your Holy Spirit to live inside us, guide us, comfort us, and help us become more like Jesus. Help us to listen for Your Spirit's voice and have the courage to follow where You lead. We know You're always with us, even when we can't see You. In Jesus' name, amen.
