Children's Sermon: Who Needs a Doctor? (Matthew 9:12-13)
Check this out! Can anyone tell me what this is? (Hold up stethoscope and pause for response.) Exactly—it's a stethoscope! Who uses these, and what do they help doctors do? (Pause for response.) Right! They help doctors listen to your heart and lungs to see if everything's working properly inside your body.
Think about this: when you're really sick—maybe you have a high fever, or you broke your arm, or you're throwing up—who do you need to see? A doctor, right? But what about when you're perfectly healthy? Do you wake up feeling great...

Of course not!
Here's something interesting about the old days: instead of sick people going to the doctor's office, doctors would actually travel from house to house with a black medical bag, visiting people who were too sick to leave their homes. They went to where the sick people were.
That's exactly what Jesus did, but He wasn't just healing physical sickness—He was healing people's hearts and souls. One day, Jesus met a man named Matthew who had a job that made everyone hate him. Matthew was a tax collector. Now, paying taxes isn't fun today, but back then, tax collectors were often corrupt. They would charge people way more money than they actually owed and keep the extra for themselves. They got rich by cheating their own neighbors!
But here's the amazing part: Jesus didn't avoid Matthew or judge him. Instead, Jesus said, "Follow me." And Matthew left everything to become one of Jesus' twelve disciples!
Later, Jesus went to Matthew's house for dinner. Matthew invited all his old friends—other tax collectors and people who had made bad choices in life. When the religious leaders saw this, they were shocked and complained to Jesus' disciples: "Why does your teacher eat with these terrible sinners?"
Jesus heard their complaint and gave them this powerful answer: "It isn't people who are healthy that need a doctor—it's people who are sick. I didn't come to call people who think they're already good enough. I came to call sinners to turn away from their sins and follow God."
Let's think about this deeper. Who needs a doctor? (Pause) The sick do! Has anyone here never been sick or injured? Of course not! We've all needed medical help at some point. Now here's the bigger question: Who needs Jesus? (Pause) Everyone does! Has anyone here never done anything wrong, never disobeyed, never been selfish or mean? The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." That means every single person needs Jesus—not just the people we think are "really bad."
But here's something to really think about: sometimes we Christians act like those religious leaders. We stay comfortable in our churches, hanging out with people who are just like us, waiting for others to come to us. But Jesus shows us a different way. He went to where people were hurting. He ate dinner with people others avoided. He showed love to people everyone else rejected.
What does this mean for us today? It means we should be like Jesus—going to where people are, not waiting for them to come to us. Maybe that's being kind to the kid at school everyone picks on. Maybe it's befriending someone who seems different or lonely. Maybe it's showing Jesus' love to people in our neighborhood who don't know Him yet.
Remember, we're not better than anyone else—we're all patients who needed the Great Physician, Jesus, to heal our hearts. And just like doctors go to where sick people are, we should go to where people need to hear about God's love.
Dear Jesus, thank You for coming to heal our hearts when we were far from You. Help us to have courage to reach out to others who need Your love, just like You reached out to us. Give us wisdom to know how to show Your love to people who might be different from us. Amen.
