What do I have today? Right, a power strip with lots of cords! I have chargers for phones, tablets, and my laptop all plugged in. Now look at this picture of what's under my desk at work...(show tangled cord picture). What a mess, right?
I'm always getting my feet caught in these cords! But here's the thing - when I'm paying attention and walking carefully, I don't get tangled up. It's only when I'm not watching where I'm going, maybe I'm distracted by my phone or thinking about something else, that I suddenly find a cord wrapped around my ankle! Have...

You know what? In our Christian life, sin works a lot like those sneaky cords. Let me read you what the Bible says about this: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith." (Hebrews 12:1-2)
This verse compares our Christian life to running a race. Just like in track and field, we need to get rid of anything that slows us down. Runners don't wear heavy backpacks or flip-flops - they wear lightweight clothes and running shoes. In the same way, we need to "throw off" sins that make it harder to follow Jesus.
What does "sin that so easily entangles" mean? Think about it - some sins seem small at first, but they can trip us up just like those cords. Maybe it starts with telling one little lie to avoid getting in trouble. Then you have to tell another lie to cover up the first one. Before you know it, you're all tangled up in dishonesty! Or maybe you start being mean to someone at school because they're different. That meanness can spread and affect how you treat other people too.
The key is "fixing our eyes on Jesus." When runners are in a race, they don't look around at the crowd or back at other runners - they keep their eyes focused ahead on the finish line. When we fix our eyes on Jesus, we're focusing on what He wants for our lives. We do this by reading our Bibles to learn what Jesus taught, praying and talking to God, worshiping Him, serving others like Jesus did, and telling people about God's love.
But here's what's challenging for kids your age - there are lots of distractions trying to get you to take your eyes off Jesus. Social media might make you compare yourself to others. Friends might pressure you to do things you know aren't right. Video games or entertainment might become more important than spending time with God or family. School stress might make you want to cheat or give up.
Let me ask you some questions: Can you think of a time when you got "tangled up" in sin because you weren't paying attention to what Jesus wanted? What are some things that distract you from following Jesus? How can we help each other stay focused on Jesus this week?
Remember, the "great cloud of witnesses" means we're not running this race alone. We have people cheering us on - our families, church friends, and all the faithful Christians who came before us. And most importantly, Jesus is both running with us and waiting for us at the finish line!
So this week, let's be like smart runners. Let's throw off the sins that tangle us up, keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, and run this Christian life with determination. When we mess up - and we all will - we can ask Jesus for forgiveness and get back on track.
LET US PRAY.
Dear Lord, help us to recognize the sins that try to tangle us up. Give us wisdom to throw off anything that keeps us from following You. Help us fix our eyes on Jesus every day through reading the Bible, praying, and serving others. When we get distracted or make mistakes, remind us that You're always ready to forgive us and help us get back on the right path. Thank You for running this race with us. AMEN
