The Love of Money

Theme

The love of money is the root of all evil

Object

A large vase with your hand inserted, preferably a clear one made of glass or crystal, with a dollar in the bottom

Scripture

"The love of money is the root of all evil." 1 Timothy 6:10

Summary of this sermon...

The love of money can lead to trouble, as seen in a funny demonstration of getting stuck trying to retrieve a dropped dollar. The Bible warns us in 1 Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is the root of all evil. We need money, but it shouldn't be the most important thing. We should use it wisely to help others, not cheat them.

Wow, do I have a problem! I dropped a dollar in this vase. Instead of shaking the vase upside down, I wanted my money back so badly that I just dove in to get it. But now my hand is stuck! (Pretend to tug on the vase a couple of times until your hand pops out.) Wow, is that a relief! Did you know that the Bible warns us about that? We read in I Timothy 6:10 that the love of money is the root of all evil. We need money - that's how your parents feed you, clothe you and send you to school. But money should never be the most important thing. We should never love money more than other people, and we should never cheat others out of their money. Let us pray: Dear Jesus, thank You for the gift of money. Please help us to always spend it wisely by helping others. Amen.
