Children's Sermon: The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:30-31)
Invite several young people or adults (possibly some church leaders) to come speak to the children. Instruct the guests to say, "You are not going to believe it, but two men were walking and talking with someone they didn't even recognize." (Keep your guests away so children do not see them ahead of time.)
Blindfold each child. If children are uncomfortable with a blindfold, ask them to close their eyes.
Our Bible lesson today tells an amazing story about a day when someone important walked and talked with some men on the Road to Emmaus,...

This happened just three days after Jesus had been crucified. The two men, Cleopas and another disciple, were devastated and confused. They had believed Jesus was the Messiah who would save Israel, but now He was dead. Let's see what that might have been like for them.
One by one, have your guests say, "You are not going to believe it, but two men were walking and talking with someone they didn't even recognize."
After each guest says that sentence, allow kids to guess who it is by only hearing their voice. If a child guesses right, they get to take off their blindfold. After all the guests have had a turn, invite kids to take off their blindfolds.
Think about this: Why do you think it was hard for some of you to recognize our guests just by their voices? Sometimes our expectations, emotions, or circumstances can make it difficult to see what's right in front of us. The disciples on the road were so heartbroken and disappointed that they couldn't see past their grief.
Here's what the special man said to them: "Do you find it so difficult to believe what was written by the prophets in the Scripture? It was predicted by the prophets that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering His time of glory." This stranger then explained all the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah - from Moses through all the prophets. Do you have any guesses of who they were talking to on the road that day?
(Allow kids to guess who the men were talking to on the road.)
The men were talking to the risen Jesus, even though they didn't realize it. God had prevented them from recognizing Him until the right moment. For some of you, it was easy to guess who our special guests were today, but for others it was difficult. Sometimes we need help to see clearly.
These men had just experienced the worst disappointment of their lives. They had watched their teacher and friend be crucified like a criminal. Their hopes were crushed. Have you ever been so upset or worried about something that you couldn't think clearly? That's exactly what happened to them. Their grief was like a blindfold over their spiritual eyes.
But here's the amazing part: Jesus didn't just appear and say "Surprise!" Instead, He walked with them in their sadness. He listened to their pain. He gently taught them from Scripture, helping them understand God's plan. Then, when they invited Him to stay for dinner, Jesus broke bread with them - and suddenly their eyes were opened! (Luke 24:30-31)
Discussion questions: When have you felt disappointed or confused about something God allowed to happen? How might Jesus be walking alongside you even when you don't recognize Him? What are some ways we can "open our eyes" to see Jesus working in our lives today?
This story teaches us that Jesus doesn't abandon us in our difficult times - He walks with us through them. Sometimes what looks like the end of the story is actually just the beginning of something even more amazing. The disciples thought Jesus' death was the end, but it was actually the victory over sin and death that made eternal life possible for all of us.
Instruct kids to hold the blindfold over their eyes. Guide them to take the blindfold off their eyes when you say, "Open our eyes" in the prayer.
God, thank you that Jesus died for our sins. Not only did He die, but He defeated death and rose again. Thank You that Jesus is alive and working in the world today, even when we can't see Him clearly. Help us remember that You are with us in our disappointments and confusion, just like You were with the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Open our eyes, (kids take off blindfolds) because we want to see Jesus working in our lives, our families, our school, and our world! Help us to be like those disciples who immediately went back to Jerusalem to share the good news with others. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.
