O Be Careful!

Living a spirit-filled life that will glorify God.

The song, "Oh Be Careful Little Eyes"

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT)

When I was the age of some of you, one of my favorite songs was one we sang in Sunday School. The name of that song was "O Be Careful Little Eyes." You may have heard it and many of you have possibly sung it. It goes like this:

O be careful little eyes, what you see,
O be careful little eyes, what you see,
For the Father up above is looking down in love,
So be careful little eyes what you see.

There are several other verses too:

  • O be careful little ears, what you hear.
  • O be careful little mouth, what you say.
  • O be careful little hands, what you do.
  • O be careful little feet, where you go.

That song reminds me of a letter that the apostle Paul wrote to the church in the city of Ephesus. In his letter, Paul wrote, "So be careful how you live. Don't live like fools, but like those who are wise. Understand what the will of the Father is and be filled with the Spirit." Paul went on to say, "Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

That is good advice, isn't it? It was good advice to the Ephesians almost 2000 years ago and it is still good advice for us today.

Heavenly Father, we are thankful for the letter that Paul wrote to the Christians at Ephesus. Help us to apply those teachings to our daily life. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
