Today's object lesson might look familiar! Remove the contents of the bag or stocking and throw it on the floor. Did your house look like this after Christmas morning? You know mine did because all this stuff came from my house. Let's be honest - sometimes Christmas presents aren't what we really expect, are they? A couple of years ago, I got my son a remote control helicopter that wouldn't fly. This year, one of the gifts we gave my grandson was a stick horse that made real horse sounds. Well, it quit working before the day was out.

Upper Elementary object lessons are designed for 10-12 year olds. They offer an expanded version of the sermon with deeper explanations, discussion questions, real-world connections, and more challenging concepts.to think about: Why do you think we get so excited about presents, but then sometimes feel disappointed afterward? Allow responses. It's because earthly gifts, no matter how awesome they seem, can't fill the deepest needs in our hearts. They break, they get boring, or they don't work like we hoped. If Christmas was only about the gifts we get, it would be a real let down every single time.
But here's the amazing news - Christmas is actually about the gifts God gave us, and His gifts are completely different from anything we'll ever find under a tree. Think about this: God gave us His only son, Jesus, who was born specifically to die on the cross to save us from the punishment our sins deserve. That's not just a nice story - that's the most valuable gift in the universe because it solves our biggest problem: being separated from God because of our sin.
And when we accept His gift of salvation by believing in Jesus, God gives us another incredible gift - the Holy Spirit to live inside us and guide us through life. Unlike video games that you might beat in one day, the Holy Spirit never runs out of "levels" or new things to teach us. Unlike toys that get broken or lost, God's plan of salvation through Jesus is perfect and never breaks down.
Here's what makes God's gifts so different: they actually change who we are on the inside. A new bike might make you happy for a while, but Jesus makes you a new person forever. The Holy Spirit doesn't just entertain you - He helps you make wise choices, comforts you when you're sad, and gives you power to do what's right even when it's hard.
So as we think about all the Christmas presents that might already be broken or forgotten, remember that God's gifts to you - salvation through Jesus and the Holy Spirit living in you - are treasures that will last forever and never disappoint you. Let's pray now and thank God for His incredible gifts to us.
