Children's Sermon: Creation: And It Was Very Good (Genesis 1)
Today we're exploring one of the most incredible stories ever told - the creation of everything we see around us. Let's start by thinking about this: scientists estimate there are over 100 billion galaxies in the universe, each containing billions of stars. That's more stars than grains of sand on all the beaches on Earth! Yet Genesis 1:1 tells us simply: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
Here's something amazing to consider - the Hebrew word for "create" used here is "bara," which means to create something completely...

Upper Elementary object lessons are designed for 10-12 year olds. They offer an expanded version of the sermon with deeper explanations, discussion questions, real-world connections, and more challenging concepts.new from nothing. Only God can do this. When we "create" art or build something, we use materials that already exist. But God spoke everything into existence from absolutely nothing.
Let's walk through the six days of creation and think about what each teaches us:
Day 1: Light - God said "Let there be light," and there was light. Think about this: light travels at 186,000 miles per second. In one year, light travels about 6 trillion miles! Yet God created all forms of light - visible light, infrared, ultraviolet - instantly with just His word. Scientists are still discovering new things about light and energy. What does this tell us about God's power and intelligence?
Day 2: Sky and Atmosphere - God separated the waters above from the waters below, creating our atmosphere. Our atmosphere is perfectly designed - 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and small amounts of other gases. If the oxygen level were just a little higher, fires would burn out of control. A little lower, and we couldn't breathe. How does this show God's careful planning?
Day 3: Land, Seas, and Plants - God gathered the waters into seas and brought forth dry land. Then He created plants. Here's something incredible: plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, while animals (including humans) take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. This perfect cycle was designed from the very beginning. Plants also convert sunlight into food through photosynthesis - a process so complex that scientists are still trying to fully understand it.
Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars - God created the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night. Our sun is perfectly positioned - if Earth were just 5% closer to the sun, we'd burn up. If we were 20% farther away, we'd freeze. The moon controls our tides and stabilizes Earth's rotation. These aren't accidents - they're evidence of God's precise design.
Day 5: Sea Creatures and Birds - God filled the waters with fish and the skies with birds. Did you know there are over 30,000 species of fish and over 10,000 species of birds? Each has unique designs perfectly suited for their environment. Arctic fish have natural antifreeze in their blood, while desert birds can survive without drinking water for days.
Day 6: Land Animals and Humans - God created every kind of land animal, from tiny insects to massive elephants. Then He created humans "in His image." This means we're different from animals - we have souls, we can think about right and wrong, we can create, and we can have a relationship with God.
Discussion Questions:
• When you look at the complexity of creation - from DNA to galaxies - what does this tell you about God's character?
• How does being made "in God's image" change how we should treat ourselves and others?
• Scientists discover new things about creation all the time. How can science help us appreciate God's creation more?
• What responsibilities do we have as caretakers of God's creation?
Real-World Connection: Every time you see a sunset, feel rain on your face, or watch an animal, you're experiencing God's "very good" creation. Even in a world affected by sin, we can still see God's fingerprints everywhere. As Christians, we're called to be good stewards - taking care of the world God entrusted to us.
After each day, God looked at what He had made and declared it "good." But after creating humans and completing everything, He said it was "very good." You are part of what God called "very good." Remember that when you're having a tough day - you're not an accident or a mistake. You're a masterpiece created by the God of the universe.
Let's pray: God, thank You for being the Creator of everything. Help us to see Your power and love in creation around us every day. Thank You for making us in Your image and calling us "very good." Help us to take good care of the world You've given us and to always remember how much You love us. Amen.
