I need four volunteers to help demonstrate what we'll be learning about discipleship and following Jesus today. (Choose four kids, and have them join you in front of the others.)

You're all brave to volunteer without knowing exactly what's coming! That takes real courage. In life, we often face situations where we don't know what's ahead - like starting at a new school, trying out for a team, or standing up for what's right when it's unpopular. Following Jesus can feel like that too sometimes. Today you'll be playing Follow the Leader, but with a twist that will help us understand...

what it really means to be Jesus' disciples. Ready? (Choose one child to be the leader and have the other three line up behind them.)

Now here's the challenge - the followers will be wearing blindfolds, just like how we sometimes can't see what God has planned for our future. (Place blindfolds on the three followers.)

Before we start, let's think critically about this: Who do you think has the harder job - the leader or the followers? Why? What are some of the biggest challenges followers face when they can't see where they're going? (Allow discussion.) What responsibilities does the leader have? (Discuss how leaders must be trustworthy, careful, and thinking about others' safety.)

To help our followers stay connected and safe, I have this rope. The leader will guide by holding one end, and the followers will hold onto the rope behind them. (Set up the rope connection.) This rope represents our connection to Jesus - as long as we stay connected to Him through prayer, reading the Bible, and obeying His teachings, we can trust His guidance even when we can't see the whole plan. (Have the leader guide the group around the room for several minutes, then remove blindfolds.)

This activity connects to a real conversation Jesus had with potential followers. In Luke 9, someone boldly declared to Jesus, "I will follow You wherever You go!" That sounds pretty committed, right? How many of you have made that kind of promise to Jesus, or would want to? (Pause for responses.)

But Jesus' response was surprising. He said, "Foxes have holes and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." What do you think Jesus meant by this warning? (Allow discussion.) Jesus wasn't trying to discourage followers - He was being honest about what discipleship really costs.

Think about it: Jesus was telling them that following Him might mean giving up comfort, popularity, or even safety. In Jesus' time, His disciples left their jobs, faced persecution, and some even died for their faith. Today, following Jesus might mean standing up to bullies, choosing honesty when lying would be easier, or using our money to help others instead of just buying things we want.

Here's the amazing part though - even when following Jesus is difficult, we're never alone. Just like our rope kept the blindfolded followers connected to their leader, we have ways to stay connected to Jesus: prayer, reading Scripture, fellowship with other believers, and obeying His commands. When we stay connected, we can trust His guidance even through the hardest times.

Let's think of some real examples: Maybe Jesus asks you to befriend the kid everyone else ignores, or to tell the truth even when it gets you in trouble, or to forgive someone who really hurt you. These aren't always easy, but when we're holding onto Jesus, He gives us the strength and wisdom we need.

There's a song that reminds us of this truth. I'll say each line, and you repeat it after me:

I wish I could protect you (Kids repeat.)

from the worries of this life. (Kids repeat.)

But if there's one thing I could tell you (Kids repeat.)

it's no matter what you do (Kids repeat.)

hold to Jesus, He's holding onto you. (Kids repeat.)

Before we pray, let's each think silently about one area where we need to trust Jesus' guidance this week - maybe at school, with friends, or at home. (Pause for reflection.)

Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus not just to save us, but to be our perfect guide through every challenge life brings. Help us to hold tightly to Jesus through prayer, Your Word, and obedience, especially when the path ahead seems unclear or difficult. Give us courage to follow wherever You lead. In Jesus' name, amen.
