Mountaintop Experiences

a high mountain to pray. These weren't just any disciples; they were part of Jesus' inner circle, the ones He trusted most. As Jesus was praying, something extraordinary happened that had never been seen before and would never happen again in quite the same way. (Hold the flashlight under your chin.) The Bible tells us that Jesus' face began to shine like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white - brighter than any bleach could make them, brighter than fresh snow on a sunny day!

But that wasn't all. Suddenly, two of the greatest heroes from the Old Testament appeared: Moses, who had led God's people out of slavery in Egypt and received the Ten Commandments, and Elijah, the mighty prophet who had called down fire from heaven. These men had been in heaven for hundreds of years, yet here they were, talking with Jesus about His upcoming death in Jerusalem. Imagine seeing your heroes from history suddenly appear right in front of you!

Peter was so overwhelmed by this incredible experience that he blurted out, "Master, this is amazing! Let's build three shelters - one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah - so we can stay here forever!" Have you ever been somewhere so wonderful that you never wanted to leave? Peter felt that way about this mountaintop moment. He wanted to capture it, preserve it, make it permanent.

But here's something important to understand: Peter didn't realize that this amazing experience wasn't meant to be the destination - it was preparation for the journey ahead. God was giving Jesus, and His disciples, strength and encouragement for what was coming next. You see, Jesus was about to face the most difficult time of His life. He would be arrested, put on trial, and crucified on a cross. This mountaintop experience was God's way of reminding Jesus - and showing the disciples - that He truly was God's Son, even when things would soon look very dark.

Think about it this way: if they had stayed on that mountain and built those shelters, they would have missed the most important event in all of history - Jesus' death and resurrection! They would have missed seeing Jesus conquer death itself. They would have missed the moment when Jesus made it possible for every person who believes in Him to have eternal life in heaven.

This teaches us something important about following Jesus. Sometimes God gives us incredible "mountaintop experiences" - maybe at summer camp, during a special church service, or in a quiet moment when we feel really close to God. These moments are precious gifts, but they're not meant to be where we stay forever. They're meant to strengthen us and prepare us for the valleys and challenges that come next in our journey with Jesus.

As followers of Jesus, we need both the mountaintop experiences and the everyday moments when we trust God even when we can't see Him working. The disciples learned that following Jesus isn't about staying in comfortable, amazing moments - it's about being willing to go wherever He leads us, even when it's difficult or scary.

Here's the most amazing part: when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have the promise that our ultimate "mountaintop experience" is still ahead of us. Heaven will be better than any moment we could ever imagine here on earth. As the song says, "Every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before," and the absolute best is yet to come!

Let's think about this: How can we prepare our hearts for both the mountaintop moments and the difficult times in our walk with Jesus? How can we use the strength from our good experiences with God to help us through the tough times? And how can we remember that no matter what we're going through right now, if we belong to Jesus, our ultimate destination is the most amazing mountaintop experience of all - eternal life with Him in heaven!

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible mountaintop experiences You give us as we follow Jesus. Help us to treasure these moments but not cling to them. Give us courage to follow Jesus wherever He leads us, through both the exciting times and the challenging ones. Remind us that because of Jesus' death and resurrection, the very best experience is still waiting for us in heaven. In Jesus' name, amen.
