Theme:

God sends his Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost

Object:

A portable electric fan with some bright red streamers tied to the guard.

Scripture:

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)

On a blazing hot summer day, an electric fan can be a lifesaver! But think about this - how exactly does a fan work to cool us down? The fan doesn't actually make the air colder like an air conditioner does. Instead, it moves the air around us, which helps our sweat evaporate faster and makes us feel cooler. Let me turn this fan on. Now, here's a puzzle for you: Do you see any air coming out of this fan? Of course not! Air is invisible. So if we can't see the air, how can we prove this fan...

is actually working?

Scientists call this "evidence" - proof that something is happening even when we can't see it directly. Let's look for evidence that this fan is working. First, I've tied these bright red streamers to the front. Watch how they dance and flutter! The invisible air is pushing them around. That's our first piece of evidence. Second, if you put your hand in front of the fan, what do you feel? That's right - you can feel the air pushing against your skin. You might even feel your hair moving! Third, listen carefully. What do you hear? The whooshing sound of air and the flapping of these streamers. We have three types of evidence: what we can see happening, what we can feel, and what we can hear.

This connects perfectly to today's special celebration called Pentecost. This word comes from the Greek word meaning "fifty" because it happened fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead. After Jesus went back to heaven, His followers were waiting in Jerusalem, just like Jesus had told them to do. They were probably nervous, wondering what would happen next. Then something amazing occurred that changed everything!

The Bible tells us in Acts chapter 2 that the Holy Spirit came to Jesus' followers in a powerful way. But here's the thing - just like the air from our fan, the Holy Spirit is invisible. So how did they know He was there? They had the same three types of evidence we talked about with our fan!

First, they heard evidence. The Bible says there was "a sound like the blowing of a violent wind" that filled the whole house. Imagine the loudest, most powerful windstorm you've ever experienced - that's what they heard! But here's what's interesting: there was no actual wind moving things around. It was the sound of God's Spirit arriving with power.

Second, they saw evidence. The Bible describes "what seemed to be tongues of fire" that separated and came to rest on each person. These weren't real flames that would burn them - they were like visible signs showing that God's Spirit was with each person. Think of it like a special light showing God's presence, similar to how our red streamers show us where the air is moving.

Third, they felt evidence - but this was the most amazing part! When the Holy Spirit filled them, they suddenly could speak in languages they had never learned before. People from many different countries were visiting Jerusalem for the Pentecost festival, and these followers of Jesus could suddenly communicate with all of them in their own languages! They felt the Holy Spirit's power working through them in a way they had never experienced.

Now here's something to think about: Why do you think God chose Pentecost, when Jerusalem was full of visitors from other countries, to give this gift? It was the perfect time for the message about Jesus to spread quickly around the world! Those visitors would return home and tell others what they had witnessed.

But here's the most important part for us today: The Holy Spirit didn't just come for those first followers and then leave. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would be with all believers forever. That means if you believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit is with you right now! You might not hear rushing wind or see flames, but you can still experience evidence of His presence.

How can you recognize the Holy Spirit working in your life today? First, you might "hear" Him speaking to your heart - not with an audible voice, but through thoughts and feelings that guide you toward what's right. Maybe you feel prompted to be kind to someone who's been mean to you, or to tell the truth even when it's hard. Second, you can "see" His work through the changes He makes in your life and the lives of others - like when you notice you're becoming more patient, loving, or brave. Third, you can "feel" His power when He helps you do things you couldn't do on your own - like forgiving someone who hurt you, or having courage to stand up for what's right.

The Holy Spirit also helps us understand the Bible better, gives us strength when we're facing difficult situations, and helps us know how to pray. He's like having God's own personal teacher and helper with you all the time!

Think about this: Just as this fan needs to be plugged into electricity to work, we need to stay connected to God through prayer, reading the Bible, and spending time with other Christians to experience the Holy Spirit's power in our lives.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing gift of Your Holy Spirit. Help us to recognize His presence in our lives each day. Give us courage to follow His guidance, wisdom to understand Your truth, and boldness to share the good news about Jesus with others, just like those first disciples did on Pentecost. Help us stay connected to You so we can experience Your Spirit's power working in and through us. Amen.
