The Miracle Worker

(Pour the Kool-Aid into the glass.) Isn't that the most amazing thing you have ever seen? How did I do that? (Allow time for them to guess how it was done.) The truth is, there was nothing magical about what happened. In the bottom of this pitcher was a package of grape Kool-Aid. I didn't turn water into wine...all I did was turn water into Kool-Aid. Anyone can do that!

I did this silly little "magic" trick this morning to help us understand something really important about Jesus. Notice that I said Jesus performed "miracles" not "magic." What's the difference? Magic tricks use hidden objects, sleight of hand, or special equipment to fool our eyes. But miracles are supernatural acts that only God can perform - they break the laws of nature itself. During his time on earth, Jesus performed many miracles that proved he was truly God's Son. He healed diseases that doctors couldn't cure, he brought dead people back to life, he walked on water defying gravity, and he fed 5,000 people with just five loaves and two fish. Scientists and doctors still can't explain how these things happened because they required God's power.

Our Bible lesson today tells of Jesus' very first recorded miracle - turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. In Jesus' time, weddings were huge community celebrations that lasted for days, sometimes even a week! Almost everyone in the village of Cana was there celebrating with the bride and groom. Jesus' mother Mary was there, and Jesus and his twelve disciples were also invited guests.

Then disaster struck - they ran out of wine! This wasn't just embarrassing; it was a social catastrophe. In their culture, running out of food or drink at a wedding was considered a terrible insult to your guests and brought great shame to the family. The celebration could have been ruined, and people would have talked about this failure for years. Mary knew her son could help, so she found Jesus and simply said, "They have no wine." Even though Jesus knew it wasn't quite time to reveal his true identity as the Messiah, he chose to quietly help this family in their moment of need.

Mary told the servants something very important: "Do whatever he tells you to do." This is great advice for us too - when Jesus asks us to do something, we should obey even if we don't understand why.

Jesus noticed six large stone water jars nearby. These weren't small containers - each one could hold twenty to thirty gallons of water! That's like 240 to 360 bottles of water in each jar. "Fill the jars with water," Jesus told the servants. Think about how much work this was - they had to carry bucket after bucket of water to fill these massive jars. When the jars were completely full, Jesus said, "Now dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies."

Here's where the real miracle happened. The servants drew out what they knew was water, but when the master of ceremonies tasted it, it had become wine - not just any wine, but the best wine of the entire celebration! The master of ceremonies was so impressed that he called the bridegroom over and said, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now!"

This miracle shows us several important things about Jesus. First, he cares about our everyday problems, not just the big spiritual ones. He could have said, "Running out of wine isn't important enough for a miracle," but instead he showed compassion for this family's embarrassment. Second, Jesus doesn't just meet our needs - he exceeds them. He didn't just make wine; he made the best wine anyone had ever tasted. Third, Jesus has power over the physical world - he can change the very molecules of water into wine instantly.

The Bible tells us this was the first miracle that Jesus performed, and after the disciples saw it, they believed in him. But here's something to think about: why did Jesus choose this as his first miracle? He could have healed someone or raised the dead. Instead, he chose to help at a party. This shows us that Jesus cares about our joy and celebrations, not just our problems and pain.

Jesus always performed miracles for a specific purpose - not to show off or become famous, but to help people believe that he was truly God's Son who came to save them. Every miracle was like a sign pointing to his true identity. When we see Jesus' power over nature, sickness, and even death, it helps us understand that he also has the power to forgive our sins and give us eternal life.

Let's think about this: If you had been one of the servants, how would you have felt when Jesus asked you to fill those huge jars with water? Would you have trusted him even though his request seemed strange? How do you think the disciples felt when they realized their teacher had just performed a miracle? What does this miracle teach us about trusting Jesus with both our big problems and our small everyday concerns?

The most amazing miracle of all is that Jesus came to earth to save us from our sins. Just like he transformed ordinary water into extraordinary wine, he can transform our ordinary lives into something extraordinary when we believe in him and follow him.

I believe Jesus is God's Son who came to save us...do you?

Father, thank you for sending your Son Jesus and for all the miracles that show us his power and love. Help us to trust him with everything in our lives, big and small. Thank you most of all for the miracle of salvation through Jesus. Amen.
