Mother's Day Match Game

Theme

Giving thanks for our mothers who set a good example by their strong faith in God.

Object

Several pairs of mothers and children from your congregation. You will need to plan ahead and make sure that the ones you plan to use will be there. Choose children who bear a very strong resemblance to their mother. Choose someone from your congregation to help you who does not know any of the children (Someone who is new to your congregation).

Scripture

I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. 2 Timothy 1:5

Since today is Mother's Day, I thought it would be fun to play a Mother's Day Match game. I have chosen several of you to help me with this game. When I call your name, please come and stand over here (call the names of the children you have chosen). Now, I want the mothers of these children to come up and stand behind one of these children, but don't stand behind your own child.

I have asked Ms. Jones to help me play this game. I chose her because she is new to our congregation and doesn't know any of you. Now, Ms. Jones, I want you to move these children around until you think you have each child standing in front of their real mother (Give your helper time to move the children around).

Okay, Ms. Jones, do you think you have them lined up correctly? Do you want to make any changes? To see if we have the children matched up correctly, I am going to ask each of the children to give your mother a great big hug! Wow! Look at that! Ms. Jones matched them up perfectly (If not, you can explain that some of us don't look very much like our mother). Do you know how Ms. Jones was able to do that? It was because these children look so much like their mothers.

In the Bible, there is a letter that the apostle Paul wrote to a young man named Timothy. In his letter, he praised Timothy for his strong faith in God. He told Timothy that he had seen this same faith in Timothy's grandmother and his mother. No doubt, Timothy developed his own faith by watching these two Godly women.

Many of you children are here in this place today because of the strong faith of your mother. She has brought you here today because she wants you to develop that same faith in God. She wants others to look at you and see the same strong faith in you that they see in her.

Today, we give thanks for our mothers and for the faith that grows in us as we watch the example set by Godly mothers.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for our mothers and for the example they set for us. Help us to live so that others will see the same faith in us that they see in our mothers. Amen.
