Rocky the Rock

God can do anything.

Dress up in rock paper/cloth which you might get from a theater department, or make yourself from gray cloth streaked with brown, white and pink. Carry in your pocket some drops of water cut out from blue paper.

Exodus 17

(You may get the senior pastor or other members of the church to play the parts of Moses and the Lord.)

I don’t very often get a chance to talk! Do you know why? Because I am…a rock! My name is Rocky. Have you ever heard of a talking rock? Neither have I. But nothing would surprise me now, because I know that God can do anything! I’ve seen it! I’ve felt it! I was sitting around here one day in the middle of Horeb, watching the sun on the sand, when I saw this big big group of people all walking together! And with this big big group of people there was a pillar of clouds and a pillar of fire, and there was an important looking man with a staff walking in front of them! (The senior pastor or other church member may step forward with a staff). It looked like a parade! Then I found out from my friend Sandy the grain of sand that the pillar of clouds and the pillar of fire were the Lord! God himself was walking with them! I thought to myself, these people must be SO happy to have God with them! But as they came closer I could tell that they weren’t happy at all! They were all complaining! They said, Moses—that must have been the important guy—we’re thirsty! We don’t have any water! God must not love us! Have you taken us out here to kill us with thirst? They kept complaining and getting angrier and angrier! They even said they might throw my friends the stones at Moses and kill him, because they were so mad at him! So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people?” And what do you think the Lord did? The Lord said, Strike the rock at Horeb, and water will come out, so that the people may drink! God loved the people so much that he would do anything to keep them safe and happy. So Moses took his staff, and he hit me with it! (Moses hits you with his staff.) I was kind of scared that it would hurt…but it didn’t! But then I felt something very strange—cool and wet—some drops of water were dripping down me….and soon there was a trickle…and soon water was gushing down everywhere! (Drop the fake water) All the people came up with cups and buckets and started drinking from me! So like I said, God can do anything. If you ever have a problem you can’t solve, just trust God. If God can make water come out of a plain old rock like me, God can fix whatever is tough in your life.

Let’s pray. God, thank you for making water come out of a rock. Help us to trust you to do anything. Amen
