Sermon Title: "A Most Precious Gift"

Scripture Reading:  John 12:1-8

Memory Verse: Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial. John 12:7 (NLT)

IDENTIFY THE ODOR: Collect various small containers with removable lids and fill them with different items with distinctive odors. (cinnamon, vanilla, grated orange peels, coffee, onion, soap, perfume) Have the children take turns putting on a blindfold and try to guess what the item is as the teacher removes the lid and holds it under the child's nose.

PERFUME BOTTLE CRAFT: Give each child an empty toilet paper roll and let them cover it with pretty wrapping paper to make it look like a fancy perfume bottle. Let the children use markers to write at the very top of their "perfume bottle" whatever name they'd like to give to their own perfume (such as Midnight Delight, Rose Petals, Coffee Brew, Fish lips, or anything silly or serious from child's imagination). Give a piece of paper to each child with today's Bible memory verse written on it to glue or tape to the decorated toilet paper roll. This will help children to remember today's story.

FOOT WASHING: Let the children choose a partner and wipe each other's feet with wet wipes or moistened wash cloths. Add some lotion to each other's feet or spray with inexpensive perfume/cologne. Ask questions about today's story. Who washed the feet of Jesus? How did she dry his feet? What did Jesus say about the purpose of Mary's anointing of his feet?

CLASS SKIT TIME: Let the children put on a skit about today's story with children taking turns at being Mary (someone with long hair or a wig), Martha, Lazarus, Jesus, Judas. Have items for the skit such as dinner items or a table, perfume, foot cleaning material, etc. If this skit can be recorded, the children will enjoy watching the lesson unfold as they put on the skit. The teacher or a student can narrate the story.

FOOT TRACING: Divide the children into pairs. Give each child a sheet of paper large enough for them to stand on it with both feet. Have the children remove their shoes and stand on the paper while their partner traces the outline of their feet. Then children can color their drawing and title it "Anointing the Feet of Jesus." When finished, they can hang their papers on the wall of the class room.

GIFT BOXES: Give each child a small box, some wrapping paper and a bow. The children will decorate their box and then create a gift tag with the sentence "GIVING MY BEST TO JESUS" written on it. The gift tag will then be attached to the gift box.

HEART BUTTONS: Give the children a piece of craft foam or construction paper to draw a small heart, cut it out and write "GIVING MY HEART TO JESUS" and tape or pin the heart on their clothes.

SNACK TIME: Serve apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon for snack. Comment on the good smell. Remindthe children that Mary anointed Jesus with perfume that smelled good.
