Sermon Title: "Are You Good Enough?"
Scripture Reading: Mark 10:17-32
SOCCER BALL GAME: Divide the children into two teams. Each team gets a ball to kick to the finish line, using only their feet but no hands. When their ball goes over the finish line, they'll continue to kick the ball back to their own team and then the next team member will do the same until all players have had a turn.
MUSICAL CHAIRS: "Are you Good Enough" to keep a chair?: Play musical chairs with the children for as long as time allows and then talk about who was good enough to keep finding a chair and let the children know that our lesson today is about being GOOD ENOUGH.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT TRYOUTS: If possible, have several musical instruments that the children can take turns trying out to see if they can play that instrument. Making a recording of the "sounds" that the musical tryouts produce will be fun for the children to listen to later as the teacher talks about "are you good enough".
GLITTER ART: Let children write ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD, FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, or FAITH IN JESUS with glitter glue. If you don't have glitter glue, use plain glue and then sprinkle glitter on the glue. Put their artwork aside to dry while you talk about today's lesson. At the end of the lesson, the children or teacher can shake the excess loose glitter off into the trash.
HEART ART: Give all of the children a large heart to trace and cut out. Decorate and color the heart and write John 3:16 on the heart. Using short pieces of yarn, hang strips of paper or mini hearts with questions from today's lesson from the big heart that the children have decorated. Questions could include "How can we have eternal life? How can we be saved? Who should we have faith in? Are we good enough? Punch holes for the yarn to be tied to the large heart or use tape to attach it to the big heart.
COMMANDMENT SCRAMBLE: Before class begins, the teacher can put slips of paper with either a commandment from the Bible or a command that the teacher has made up. When it is time to begin, have the children run around a designated area and find all of the slips of paper and come back to the area where the teacher will have two poster boards. One poster should be labeled "Commandments from the Bible" and the other one "Commandments NOT in the Bible." The children will tape their slip of paper to the appropriate poster. When the children are finished, see how many commandments are on the correct poster and discuss if we are GOOD ENOUGH to do ALL of those commandments listed. At the end of the discussion, the teacher will explain that none of us are GOOD ENOUGH to keep all of the commands but WITH GOD, ALL THINGS POSSIBLE.
BIBLE VERSE BRACELETS: Give the children a wide strip of construction paper that will be short enough to fit around their wrists. Let each child write ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD, or JOHN 3:16, etc on their bracelets and decorate with a sticker, etc. Tape onto the child's wrist to wear home.
FALL LEAVES PLACEMAT: Provide the children with some cutouts of leaves to color in autumn colors. Glue the leaves to a sheet of construction paper and write "With God All Things Are Possible" on the construction paper. If available, provide clear contact paper to put over and under their placement so they can take that home and use on their own kitchen table.
SING A SONG: CLEANSE ME; BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD
SNACK TIME: Hide some snacks in various places and have the children start out to find their snacks. As they get closer or farther from the treats, give them hints that they are "getting warmer" or "getting cooler" and ask them, "ARE YOU GOOD ENOUGH TO FIND THE SNACKS?" This will help children remember their lesson and all that they've learned today!
