Hi kids. Do you know what I’m holding in my hand? Yes, it’s Spider-man (or another action hero)! Do you know what special talents or abilities Spider-man has? He can shoot out a web from his hand and swing from building to building or climb like a spider on the walls. He has special powers.
Who’s your favorite action hero? Superman? Wonder Woman, Captain America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk?
Congregation: Who’s your favorite superhero? (Have them shout out.) (Show a picture of superheroes on the screen.)
Today’s Gospel lesson today deals with Jesus sending out his disciples ahead of him to prepare his way. He gave them special superpowers to heal and to cast out demons, to tread on snakes and scorpions and not be hurt.
When they came back they were really excited at their new superpowers. They marveled that even the demons submitted to them (vs. 17).
Jesus taught them a lesson about those superpowers. While they were impressive there was something far more important—having their names written in the Heavens (vs. 21).
That's the more important gift—the power to become the children of God—to be in God’s kingdom. That’s the most important superpower that we have by submitting to Christ and being filled with the Holy Spirit. That gives us superpower to live forever.
Let's pray: Father, thank you for giving your disciples superpowers to heal the sick, to cast out demons, and to walk on poisonous snakes and scorpions. Thank you much more that because we have accepted your Son as our savior; we have the gift of the Holy Spirit and the promise of living in your kingdom forever. In Jesus name Amen.
