Recently, I was listing to kids memorize and recite scripture. Several were having a hard time with a verse and I realized why. The verse had the word “redemption” in it. It’s pretty hard to remember stuff when you don’t know what it means. So today, you older kids are going to help me explain it to the younger ones. When we talk about redemption in church it always has to do with Jesus and what He did for us. So when I looked up the word “redeem” in the dictionary, it was easy to see how the definitions can help us understand that. There were 4 main definitions:
- to buy
- to pay off
- to get back
- to exchange
Who did Christ buy? That’s right us. The bible says we are not our own, but we have been bought with a price.
What did we owe that needed paying off? Our life...’cause the wages of sin is death
We needed to get back to God. Why are we separated from God? Sure, sin! All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory.
What about the exchange? What did Jesus give up for us? His life in exchange for ours. He gave his life as a ranson or redemption for many.
Now let’s memorize today’s verse and know what it means to each of us.
