What holiday is coming up this week? 4th of July..right What do we celebrate on the 4th of July……our freedom…..right…In 1776, a long, long time ago our country separated from England and we became our own country, the United States of America.

Today I want us to talk about the two big flags you see here….the US Flag and the Christian Flag

How are the two flags the same? Right …they’re both red, white, and blue……Also they stand for other things…… The US flag stands for our country and all the freedoms that we have. The Christian flag stands for Jesus and his kingdom and eternal life that we have if we believe in him.

Each flag has a pledge that goes with it…….You all know the Pledge of Allegiance and probably say it every day during school.

Let’s look at the words……”I pledge allegiance” ……… A pledge is a promise. Allegiance means to be loyal or true. “to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands”….The republic means the US government, a government in which the people elect their leaders. “one nation under God, indivisible” Indivisible means something cannot be divided. “with Liberty and Justice for all. Liberty is freedom. Justice is fairness. So what we’re really saying is……. “I promise to be true to the flag of the United States of America and to the government for which it stands, one nation under God, which cannot be divided, with freedom and fairness for all.”

When we look at the pledge to the Christian Flag, we see similar words……. “I pledge allegiance” …..again I promise to be true ….”to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands”…….we’re promising our loyalty to Jesus……. “One brotherhood uniting all mankind,” means Jesus loves us all, no matter what color our skin is or where we live “in service and love." Means our goal as Christians should be to serve Jesus and love others and tell them about Jesus. So what we’re really saying is……. “I promise to be true to the flag of Jesus and to his heavenly kingdom, one brotherhood uniting all people no matter what color their skin is or where they live, in service and in love.”

So let’s think about the meaning whenever we see the United States flag or the Christian Flag or whenever we say the pledges to each flag.

Let’s all stand right now and say the pledge to each flag.

Say Pledge to US Flag Say Pledge to Christian Flag "I pledge allegiance to the Christian Flag and to the Savior for whose kingdom it stands. One brotherhood, uniting all mankind, in service and love."

PRAY Thank you Lord for our country and its flag. Help our country to truly remain one nation under God. Help us to honor Jesus and pledge our loyalty to him and tell others about him, no matter what color their skin or where they live. Amen
