Sermon Title: "The Real Thing"

Scripture Reading: Luke 3:7-18

FRUIT CAN RELAY: Divide the class into teams and set up two cans up for each team labeled FRUITS and VEGETABLES. Have pictures of various fruits and vegetables in a basket by the fruit and vegetable cans. Each child will run to the two cans for his team and pick out a picture of a fruit or vegetable and put it in the correct can and run back to his team and let the next player continue to play. Play as time allows.

GUESSING GAME: Let children try to shake and rattle different cans that the teacher has taken labels off of but that are NOT opened. Have children or teams try to guess what was in each can. The teacher will have to number the cans and keep a secret list of what is in each can to let the children know who is correct.

JESUS IS THE REAL THING BUTTON: Give the children round buttons cut out of heavy card stock or construction paper. The children will decorate their button and write JESUS IS THE REAL THING on it. Cover the decorated button with contact paper and tape a safety pin to the back for the child to pin the button to their shirt or blouse.

CROSS NECKLACE: Provide the supplies for children to trace and cut a cross out of construction paper or thin foam to decorate with colored glue and stickers. Provide a plastic string or ribbon to hang the cross as a necklace.

GIVING BOXES: Let the children decorate two boxes for the class. Provide boxes that will be big enough to hold some food products for two needy families. Let the classroom children pick out food from the table that the teacher and helpers have provided, to put into the food baskets, such as macaroni and cheese, baked beans, gravy, instant potato boxes, or jello. Encourage children to each write a note of encouragement to the families that will receive their LOVE GIFT!

TASTE TEST: Provide mini Dixie cups of soft drinks that are all labeled COKE. Let the children do a taste test to see if they can determine which cups contain the REAL THING.

BAPTISM CANS: Give each child an empty can to cover with construction paper and write THE REAL THING on the outside. Then give the children strips of paper on which they can write ways that they can be REAL and place them inside the Baptism Can. Suggestions: repentance, helping others, feeding the poor, give clothes to the poor, and give toys to needy children. Encourage the children to read their slips of paper throughout the week to remind them to be THE REAL THING!!

"LOVE IS THE REAL THING " LOOP CHAINS: Give the children small strips of colored paper (red and green) to write the names of people with whom they can share Jesus or names of family or friends they would like to pray for, and then make a loop chain to hang around the walls of the classroom, or on a Christmas tree if you have one in the classroom.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: Remind the children that Jesus is the Light of the World and all the lights that we'll place on our classroom Christmas trees should serve as a reminder that Jesus told us that we should also let our lights shine in the world!

SING A SONG: SHARE HIS LOVE; O COME LET US ADORE HIM

SURPRISE SNACKS: Mark containers and put snacks inside. Ask children if the snack inside was the REAL THING that was written on the outside. (The teacher can have some containers marked inaccurately.) Use small treats such as M & M's, Skittles, etc.
