Sermon Title: "Searching for Treasure"
Scripture Reading: Luke 12:32-34
TREASURE RUN: Send all the children to a designated outside area if available, to RUN for "treasures" of a various kinds such as RUN for nature items; RUN for toy treasures; RUN for Bible verses; RUN for food items.
TREASURE HUNT: Have a large "Treasure Box" that will be decorated by the teacher before class time. Have small items, such as beads, jewelry, small toys, balls, etc. hidden in various places before the children arrive. Let the children HUNT for an item that the teacher will name for each child individually, and bring that item back to the decorated "Treasure Box."
SEEK FOR TREASURES: Give the children plastic drinking glasses to make EYE GLASSES, as they just cut the bottom out of the glass and peek thru the top of the glass. They could use these "treasure eye glasses" for the TREASURE HUNT listed above, or in hunting for Bible verses or in hunting for Puzzle pieces in the BIBLE PUZZLE activity.
BIBLE PUZZLE HUNT: Give each child a letter-sized piece of poster board and let them trace over words from our Bible verse today (for younger children) or write today's Bible verse (for older children). Lightly color and decorate the page with a picture of a Bible, a heart, a cross, and some stickers. The children will then cut their decorated pages into several pieces to create a puzzle. The first child can scatter their cut puzzle pieces over a designated area and choose one of their classmates to HUNT for the pieces and try to put the puzzle together. Continue to let all the children do the same. Children may enjoy hunting for the puzzle pieces with the "eye glasses" listed above.
TREASURE BOX: Use an empty tissue box, or any other box with a slit in the top, which can be decorated with construction paper and strips of paper across the top to represent a treasure box. A tracing of a key hole can also be cut out and glued to the front of the decorated box. Children should be given several neon colored index cards to write Bible verses as the "treasures" to be placed inside their treasure boxes. Encourage children each week following this lesson, to place another Bible verse TREASURE into their treasure boxes.
TREASURE PANTOMIME: Divide into teams and have the children work together to create a pantomime for the opposing team. Each pantomime should be a "treasure" of one way to HELP or ENCOURAGE someone else who is in need to build up "treasures" in HEAVEN! If a child cannot think of an idea for the pantomime, the teacher can have some ideas written on slips of paper for the children to choose from.
SHARE A SNACK: Cupcakes with a "treasure" in the middle, or little tootsie rolls with a slip of paper wrapped around the middle of the tootsie roll with a "treasure" in heaven, or words from today's Bible verse.
