Children's Halloween Sermon: The Pumpkin (John 1:1-5)

Can anyone tell me what this is? (Hold up the jack-o’-lantern.) I brought a jack-o’-lantern with me this morning because we’re getting ready for Halloween. What are some things we do on Halloween? (Pause for response.)

When you make a jack-o’-lantern, it’s important to clean the pumpkin first and scrape all of the seeds and goop out of the inside before you carve it.

Then it’s time to cut out the face. You’ll want to have eyes, a nose, and a mouth! Finally, you put a candle inside the jack-o’-lantern and light it. (Do this to your jack-o’-lantern.) When it’s all finished, you place the jack-o’-lantern in the window so that everyone who passes by your house will see its light.

This is a lot like what happens when we invite Jesus into our heart.

When we become a Christian, Jesus picks us up and cleanses our life from sin. He removes all the yucky thoughts and the seeds of doubt, hate, and selfishness that we have inside. Then He puts a smile on our face and His light inside our hearts to shine for all the world to see.

I don't know what you think of when you see a jack-o’-lantern, but I hope that this Halloween you will think of Jesus. Think about how He came to take away your sin and put His light in our hearts to shine for Him.

Dear Jesus, help us to let our light shine so that others will see our good works and glorify our Father in Heaven. Amen.
