The Spork

Theme

We have to choose between serving God or the world. We can't do both.

Object

A Spork

Scripture

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24 NKJV

Have you ever try to eat with a spork? It’s really hard, because the ends are not sharp enough to poke anything and it’s impossible to eat the soup without it running through the cracks. I think the main problem with the spfork is that it’s trying to be too many things at once. It would work a lot better if it would make up its mind whether it was a spoon or fork. Because it’s trying to be both it ends up being neither. This reminds me of some people I know. They want to please everybody, but end up pleasing nobody. I’m guilty of doing this myself, sometimes. The problem with trying to please everybody is that we can’t be two things at once. We can’t be a fork and a spoon at the same time.

In the same way, we can’t serve God and this world at the same time. We can’t be doing what God wants if we are focused on pleasing people, it doesn’t work like a shfork. We have to make a choice. Whose side are you on? Are you a fork or spoon?

Heavenly father, help us to realize that doing your will is more important than pleasing people. Help us to stop getting caught up in what other people think, and focus on what really matters, serving you.
