Have you ever been to a concert? What concert did you go to? I have with me today a ticket from a special rock and roll concert that I kept, from a band called the Grateful Dead. Many people think church is like a concert. They come to church to sit in the audience and listen to beautiful music or a great sermon. But the Bible teaches us that church is not a concert. Church is where we praise God, and all of us have a part to play in worshiping God. So I think church is a little bit more like a game I like to play. Do you know what this is? It’s a guitar from the game Guitar Hero. Some of the grown ups might not know what that is, can you tell them? It’s a video game where you press these buttons and strum with this button as the notes show up on the screen. If you don’t press the right buttons at the right time, you won’t hear any music, and the crowd will boo at you. But if you do press the right buttons, it’s like magic! You can play guitar like a real rocker! In real life, I can’t play guitar like Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix. But on Guitar Hero, I’m pretty sweet! That’s another way worship is like Guitar Hero. You might not be a very good singer. But when you lift your voice to praise God, you sound like a beautiful opera singer to God’s ears, because you are giving God the glory. So always remember to read the words in your bulletin, and sing the hymns in your hymnal, and you can be a Worship Hero!
Let us pray. Lord God, help us to give you glory in worship, so that we can be a Worship Hero for you. Amen.
